Amani’s Lab Presentation

This week, Amani Qaqish, a senior undergraduate research assistant, gave a presentation entitled “That’s It, I Quit! Decision Making in a Changing Work Environment.”

Workplace dynamics can be difficult to maneuver. From organizational changes to job insecurity, experiencing a negative work environment can lead to a myriad of unwanted outcomes and can even cause people to leave their jobs for good. Amani’s research has aimed to answer important questions about this very topic, and at last week’s lab meeting she gave an exciting update about her current research and future plans!

In her presentation, Amani talked about the results of her data which she collected via an online survey. She looked into tipping points regarding when and why people decide to quit their jobs. She did this by using five different hardships (pictured above) that are common in the workplace such as job insecurity and organizational change. Each time point gave an opportunity for the participant to quit the job based on the scenario, which would be considered the “tipping point” she was focusing on.

Amani found that most participants tipped after Time 1, organizational change. Thereafter, more and more participants reached their tipping points and quit after each hardship was experienced. She explained how her work will help to fill in existing gaps in I/O psychology literature. We are very excited to see what the future holds for Amani as she continues her work in this lab!

It was also Amani’s birthday this past week! The lab put together a Pink Drink Party and celebrated before her presentation!
