Celebrating Outstanding Research at Authors at Oakland Event!

Last week, the FF-TIP Lab was represented at Kresge Library’s Authors at Oakland Event, where both faculty and students were recognized for their research achievements. Dr. Taku was one of two speakers selected to present her recently published article, “Thoughts and emotions evoked by thinking about own death: American versus Japanese undergraduates”, while Gina
Reyes, a second-semester undergraduate student, was honored with second place in the Frank Lepkowski Undergraduate Research and Writing Award for her literature review, “Confronting doubt and responding to uncertainty.”

This year’s event theme, The Celebration of the Journal, provided Oakland scholars with the opportunity to have their published journal articles recognized. Dr. Taku gave a wonderful presentation using posters rather than the traditional slideshow, discussing student responses to two key questions: “What emotions does the thought of your own death arouse in you?” and “What will happen to you when your body dies?” We also learned about the implications of these questions for Terror Management Theory and how the results might also apply to a Meaning Management Theory.

Gina’s award-winning literature review explored the causes of doubt in one’s beliefs and worldviews, as well as how individuals respond to uncertainty. Her work, which analyzed 24 articles, was recognized for effectively applying key principles of information literacy.

We were also thrilled to have lab alumni Amani Qaqish and Amber Efthemiou join us for the event! It was a great experience listening to research being presented to an audience of diverse disciplines and celebrating the accomplishments of our lab members.
