Recently, in the FF-TIP lab, Junior undergraduate student Gina Reyes’ research grant application was selected as the awardee for the Provost Undergraduate Student Research Award!
She is excited to conduct an in-person experiment by applying the grant, and as a prep, she gave a step-back presentation regarding her independent study on what causes people to doubt their beliefs.
Gina started her presentation by identifying what the current literature says regarding people’s beliefs, terror management theory, and cognitive dissonance. She then went on to explain how the literature links to her research questions and how it informed the development of the methodology she will use to collect data. As part of her presentation, Gina asked what she could do to improve her experimental conditions, as well as any other theoretical background she could use, so she can provide answers to “so what” questions.
Her fellow lab mates asked questions to gain more context and clarify anything covered within the presentation. After all questions were addressed, Gina took a “step-back” to allow lab members to discuss different factors that might be worth examining in the study. We, in the FF-TIP Lab, value step-back presentations as they allow fellow lab members to take on projects as their own, opening the door for alternative ways to view the research, and can produce new ideas.
Gina gave an excellent presentation, and we are very proud of her research. We look forward to what she shows in the future!
